This all-too-familiar style of false and sensationalist reporting misrepresents expressed views and disseminates dangerous misinformation, sowing fear and distrust, tearing the fabric of our community.
Citizens for Liberty meet twice a month. Anyone can attend their open meetings to learn first-hand what they're about. Instead, the Herald published baseless allegations of a hate-mongering out-of-state group which deceptively represents itself as the "Coalition for Human Dignity".
The United States Constitution with its Bill of Rights is the first government charter in human history to expressly recognize and protect the rights and dignity of the individual. Those who foolishly believe that support of the Constitution is un American are tragically unaware of the array of deliberately-legislated curtailrnents which now threaten to cancel these Constitutional guarantees for us all.
The Constitution is the first law of our land. All public officials take an oath to uphold it. All citizens are responsible for seeing that it remains in force through the exercise of their votes and their rights of petition.
Suggesting that Citizens for Liberty is a hate group because of its dedication to the Constitution is an absurd and despicable smear tactic. It projects hatred where there is nothing but good will. A full retraction and apology is due to Ben Hinkle and his family, to Citizens for Liberty, and to all the citizens of Whatcom County.
