In August 1997, Public Good's served 2,478 page requests. Even during the dog days of the silly season, when the media hits its annual low in presenting information to the public, our audience continues to steadily grow.
In the last six months, we've been happy to see an expanded discussion of the social implications of organized violence in the United States. Most heartening has been the increased interest by religious groups in the moral questions raised by right-wing terrorism, apocalyptic superstitions, and ethnocentrism. There has also been increased interest in Wise Use disinformation campaigns, particularly the beginning awareness in the scientific community of the assault on scientific institutions by the "junk science" PR campaigns.
Another hopeful sign has been the upsurge in community involvement in land use planning issues. You can read about Public Good's ongoing case study of citizen control of the planning process involving Western Washington University. Our research is beginning to shed valuable light on the role of comprehensive land use planning in expanding participatory democracy and how citizens can confront abuses of power by local and state agencies.
Ralph Maugh's What's Old and What's New about the Wise Use Movement has shot up to #1. Loretta Ross' White Supremacy in the 1990's is still going strong at #2. Frankly, we were surprised to see our report A Not So Distant Mirror shoot up to #3. Our eyewitness account of a militia meeting at the peak of the Patriot movement expansion Militia of Montana Meeting at Maltby is still popular -- thanks to Mark Pitcavage's Militia Watchdog site, among others. Daniel Junas' Angry White Guys with Guns is holding strong at #5. This report was published in CovertAction Quarterly prior to the Oklahoma City bombing.
For comparison, check out our Top Ten in January 1997. You can expect the next update of "What's Hot" in early 1998.

To help you surf the web, here are links to sites that have links to Public Good. This is sort of the reverse of a links page, since these are all pages that have found this site of interest. These capture Public Good's community of interest. The number to the left of each link is how many referrals came from a particular page, so you will find several sites that have more than one link. Some of these links will probably expire in the future. If you get a dead link, please contact us so that we can deactivate it. We appreciate the interest in our site and thank everyone who has provided these links for their interest and support.

Public Good's Hit Parade -- The Big Five
Top 50 +1 requested files at Public Good
Backlinks: Top referrals to Public Good from other pages
Search engine queries to Public Good
These two charts represent the referrals to Public Good through web search engines. Roughly half of the search engines report the search terms to our server, so we assume that the sample is representative of the links from search engines which do not report search terms. The search terms were cross-indexed to Public Good subject categories. Interestingly, the only search that incorporated the term "terrorism" directly sought web pages on "Islamic terrorism." This suggests that people do not use the word "terrorism" to describe acts like the Oklahoma City bombing. The other observation we draw from these statistics is that most people surf the web through static links, rather than though search engines. Only 2% of the file accesses at Public Good were through search engines. We found this surprisingly low and have included the section on backlinks accordingly.
